The fake oil surfaces year after year. 

Since June last year, 23 fake engine oil events have been reported through Internet channel by more than the total events in 2021. From August 2021 to January 2022, nearly 20 events were reported in half a year, with the amount of money involved in events of RMB 3 billion.

In exposed fake engine oil cases, merchants had a rich variety of transactions and wide channels. Lured by the high profits, many motor parts towns, auto repair factories, and even 4S stores took risks. 

In June 2021, the Market Supervision and Administration of a district in Ningbo inspected 6 auto repair factories, 3 of which sold fake oil of famous brands such as Castrol, Shell, and Mobil. This fake oil was provided by door-to-door suppliers. The party negotiated the price with the supplier through WeChat and agreed on the purchase quantity, and then the supplier provided a doorstep delivery service, with the sales price of RMB 50-100 cheaper than that of the genuine lubricating oil.

Which one is chosen among synthetic oil, semi-synthetic oil and mineral oil?

Engine oil, called the blood of the engine, consists of base oil and additives.

The base oil determines the basic properties of the engine oil, and the additives play a role in remedying or improving the weaknesses of base oil, and can generate some new properties. 

Based on different base oil, engine oil can be divided into three main types: Full-synthetic oil (chemical synthetic oil), semi-synthetic oil and mineral oil. 

The engine oil from high to low is: 

Full-synthetic oil → semi-synthetic oil → mineral oil. 

01 Full-synthetic oil 

Full-synthetic oil contains high-purity base oil. The refined full-synthetic oil contains hardly any impurities, reducing unnecessary wear and prolonging the service life of the engine.

If economic conditions permit, it is recommended to use full-synthetic oil.

02 Semi-synthetic oil 

Semi-synthetic oil, as a mixture of mineral oil and chemical synthetic oil, is prepared by remedying the weakness of mineral oil with the components of synthetic oil. For the blended oil, its performance and price are in the middle of those three. 

Under normal use, it can be replaced every 7,000km or every 7 months.

03 Mineral oil 

The base oil of mineral oil is made by distilling crude oil to remove unnecessary harmful ingredients. Its service life and lubricating performance are not as good as those of synthetic oil. It's widely used in urban life and daily life due to low price, and can basically meet the daily urban traffic. 

Under normal use, it can be replaced every 5,000km or half a year.

The quality of automotive engine oil can be distinguished based on its two "identity cards"

Automotive engine oil purchased through formal channels isn't basically fake and its grade can be identified from the two pieces of important information marked on the package. 

➤ Quality grade (API) 

The deeper the "SA, SB, SC, SE, SF, SG, SH, ST, SL, SM, SN" marked on the automobile engine oil bottle body fall in order, the higher the engine oil quality grade is. 

➤ Viscosity grade (SAE) 

The W on the engine oil bottle body represents Winter. The smaller the value in front of w, the better the low temperature fluidity of the oil, meaning that the lower the available ambient temperature, and the better the protection ability of the engine during cold starts. 

The number after "W" represents the viscosity index of the oil at high temperatures. The larger the value, the higher the viscosity.
